air or fire?

I'm looking to get into some competitive pistol shooting at the sport level. I haven't shot since high school, about 20 years ago. I liked it then, but school, family and finances have prevented me from really pursuing it past informal target shooting with my high school buds.
Now I'm at a point where I'd like to get back into it, semi-seriously to see if I still like it. The question is whether I want to go the .22 rimfire route or the .177 air pistol to start. Equipment cost is still a bit of an issue, so I'd rather not spend more than $300 on a gun. I'm looking at the Baikal IZH 46M on the air side or a Ruger Mk II/III or Browning Buckmark in the .22 rimfire.
Advantages I can see right off for the airgun is that I can basically shoot anywhere (within reason) and don't need a permit to purchase (not that I'd have a problem getting a permit). Firearms have some other pratical advantages over the airguns as well and there seem to be more opportunities for firearm matches around here than airgun.
What I'm asking the board is what got them interested in one over the other and why? I know this is largely a personal preference but maybe you can point out some things I haven't thought of.
Thanks in advance.
