Plans for constructing shooting case

I may not be the most adept at using search, but I do recall that somewhere in the past there was a posting of plans to build a target box for carrying pistols. Please help locate it. TIA, CraigE

Happy New Year everyone.

I am new to target shooting and I am intending to build my own target box as well, one that can serve me well for the first five years of training. Don't think I will be owning more than 1 pistol at a time for this period, so this will be specific for 1 air pistol (most likely candidate a Styer LP10).

What are the things I should look out for, and thanks to Bill for sharing the photo, does anyone have a technical drawing/sketch that you can share? Or else I will make up one and put it up here and hopefully the more experienced shooters can give me your comments on improving on the design. It will be made of 1/2" ply, laminated finish, on castors for easy "roll about", lockable for legal reasons.

Please help. Thanks.

The LP10 comes in a VERY nice lockable case. add a duffle bag or back pack for your shooting glasses, ear plugs, pellets, targets (you won't need these at SCAA but you will at HKRA), in fact, Pilk sells a nice rolling back pack the case will fit into! http://www.pilkguns.com/ppack.htm

does your arms license allow you to keep the air pistol at home? if not, you probably don't want anything larger than the case it comes with to fit the door in the armory.

However if you will travel (come here!) you should not carry a gun in a home-made case as luggage. they make VERY good cases for air travel and the locked LP10 case wrapped in a suitcase of clothes is probably safe and legal.

US NRA bullseye pistol shooters use a very fancy box to hold 4 pistols and a scope and a bunch of .45 ammo, but international shooters do not and air gun shooters don't use a scope. international style shooters usually have a commercial airline-trying int'l and who is primarily int'l

I don't even think there is enuf room on an international bench for such a box as NRA shooters use.

Bill! You are everywhere!

Thanks for the pictures and explanation. I believe I am able to keep the pistol at home (if I am frequently competing) , but I have yet to confirm the conditions (trigger lock only or I have to invest in a safe) with the police department here.

I am a pretty lazy person, and dragging a trolley is definitely much easier and less effort than lugging a heavy bag, and that is why I was toying with the idea of a target box. Well, since you mention it, and the LP10 does have a pretty sweet case, I will most likely use a "generic" hand luggage case and add partitioning in when I go to the range with my personal items.

I built the pistol stand and box shown in the picture. I sold the pistol a year or two ago and was suprised to see it pictured here.
When I bought the FWB Model 100 I was irritated that when you layed the pistol on it's side it would rest on the rear sight. After a while I decided to make a stand to hold the pistol upright which is shown in the picture. Then, when I wanted to transport the pistol and stand to matches, I made the box to hold the stand with the pistol in it. I never made any plans as I just built it one part at a time to make everything fit.

Kinda like seing an old friend.

Fwiw....
If you shoot FP and don't require a deep multiple-gun case, make it about half the width. To maintain stability with the lid up and supporting a spotting scope, incorporate a slide-out drawer/table in the base which will extend the footprint area.
