My kids air pistols have sights that are adjustable for rear width and a front post that can be turned to change the width. Are there any guidelines or rules of thumb for setting this up with respect to the gap visible between the sides of the front sight being viewed in the rear sight?
Some sort of formula for rear notch vs front sight width at a given sight radius?
Also, for 10m air pistol, are there recommendations for a wider front post vs narrower?

The general recommendation is that the width of the front sight should be close to the apparent width of the black.

The width of the gaps is a bit more a matter of personal taste. Many older shooters find their eyes like a wider gap. Also, some people try to make the gap too small on the theory that it is "more precise". This can lead to overthinking the shot and trying to fire when it's "just right", which leads to poor trigger control.

The gap should be at least wide enough that when settled into your hold, the gap on either side should NEVER go to zero due to wobble.

Assuming you shoot with a sub-6/"area" hold, another consideration is how low below the black you align your sights. See: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=61145&p=293643

Front sight width should be between 70-100% of the perceived width of the target black.
The light gap of 2/1 for precision and 3/1 for Rapidfire.
The above will vary with light level (brightness) and type of light natural outdoor or indoor.
