Sport and Free Pistol Titles Close Out USA Shooting National Championships for Rifle/Pistol

FORT BENNING, Georgia (July 2, 2017)
A week of intense competition at the home of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit wrapped today as the final titles of the week – Free and Sport Pistol – were awarded at the USA Shooting National Championships for Rifle/Pistol.

Alexis Lagan (Boulder City, Nevada, pictured above) picked up her second medal of these National Championships when she won the Women’s Sport Pistol title. National Champion titles were awarded based on points accumulated over two days of Qualification matches, as well as additional points earned based on placement in one Final. Lagan earned enough points with her second-place finish in the Final to edge out 2008 Olympian Brenda Silva (Snowflake, Arizona) for the gold. Nathalia Tobar (East Northport, New York) won bronze.

Lagan also won silver in Women’s Air Pistol earlier in the week. Each of these women will also receive appointments to the USA Shooting National Team, pending approval of their Performance Standard Scores.

On the Junior side, fresh off the flight from Germany where she competed in the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Junior World Championship for Rifle/Pistol, Katelyn Abelin (Douglasville, Georgia) won gold by a dominating 36 points. Abbie Leverett (Bainbridge, Georgia), who won today’s Final, won silver and Rachel Cantrell (Boise, Idaho) won bronze.

In Men’s Free Pistol, Dan Brown (Kimberly, Idaho) entered today’s second day of Qualification with a 24-point lead. As often goes with Free Pistol, standings can change quickly and he was overtaken by Ohio State’s Anthony McCollum (Purdin, Missouri), who won today’s Final, as well as the overall gold medal in the event. Brown would win silver and Richard Gray (Fredericksburg, Virginia) won bronze.

Tony Chung (Diamond Bar, California, pictured above) picked up his fifth medal of these National Championships when he won gold in the Junior Men’s Free Pistol event. Prior to the Final, Chung had already amassed a 15-point lead over his nearest competitor, Zachary Miller (Sylacauga, Alabama), who won silver. Ryan Yi (Diamond Bar, California), Chung’s teammate at the Bridge Shooting Club, won the bronze medal.

Chung also won gold in Junior Men’s Rapid Fire Pistol, gold in Junior Men’s Air Pistol, silver in Junior Men’s Standard Pistol and gold in Junior Men’s Sport Pistol throughout the duration of the week.

A World Shooting Para Sport (WSPS, formerly IPC Shooting) match was held in conjunction with these National Championships. R5 (Mixed 10m Air Rifle Prone SH2) closed the competition with American McKenna Dahl (Arlington, Washington) bringing home the gold medal. It’s the same event in which Dahl won bronze at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Ryan Cockbill of Great Britain won silver and Timothy Jeffery, also of Great Britain, won bronze.

Brazen Sports, the official timekeeper of USA Shooting, generously donated awards for the top male and female performer in each discipline, as well as top American male and female Paralympic athletes. Watches were awarded today to Chung as Top Male Pistol Athlete, Lagan as Top Female Pistol Athlete and Dahl as top Female Paralympic athlete.

More than 350 athletes from across the country descended on Fort Benning to compete for National Championship titles and appointments to the National, National Junior and National Paralympic Teams. More than 30 athletes from nine countries came to compete in the WSPS-sanctioned match.

Possible foreshadowing of the fate of other disciplines that are dropped from the Olympics program? (I'm looking at you, Free Pistol.)
