I will be using a new set of Leupold Rifleman Detachable Rings to mount an Ultradot onto a .22 caliber pistol.

The rings are 1" in diameter, horizontally split and made of aluminum in a Weaver pattern. Each ring top is secured

with 2 screws. The tech at Leupold stated that 22 in-lbs. of torque was the maximum recommended amount to use.

Being unfamiliar with Ultradots, he was reluctant to say if this amount was okay to use on this brand of sight.

Have any of you ever used a torque screwdriver when tightening the ring top screws? If so, what amount worked

for you? I don't want to accidentally over do it and end up crushing my Ultradot's tubes.

If you're biting your tongue, you're putting it on too tight.

Just put it on firmly, with a little electrical tape in the rings and you'll be fine.

I do appreciate your suggestion; will give it a try. Have a few more questions. Should I put that tape

only the ring bottoms? Only on the tops? Or is it best to apply it on both surfaces of both the front

and rear rings? Thanks!

I would put the tape on front and rear bottom rings, covering about 90 degrees of the circle.

This will keep the scope from slipping from the recoil.

It really isn't that big a deal.

Little known secret with using the "L" shaped allen and torx bit keys.
Finger tight is using the long end into the screw with your fingers on the "L" section.

Putting the "L" section into the screw and pulling on the long end until it "torsions" is just about the proper torque.
Make sure there is a gap in between the ring halves when torqued.

As far as using gooey electrical tape, DO NOT USE IT.
There is never any need to put anything in between the scope and inner rings unless something is not right, and if something is not right, then fix it, but not with adding TAPE.

Are you saying that Leupold Rifleman Detachable Rings are crap mounts?

I don't know whether the Leupold rings are any good or not.

I'm using crap rings I had laying around in my junk box.

Good rings or not, the tape works.

Leupold Rifleman rings are excellent and at a very cheap price. Been using them for years on my 1911 slide mount wad guns. No issues. Very convenient as you can detach and reattach without loosing zero. Degrease with solvent and use Leupold's 22 inch pound or snug tight. No need for tape. They are very strong and will crush the tube if you get carried away.
