USA Shooting
European World Cups Await Junior Shotgun & Paralympic Team Members
Junior members of the USA Shooting Shotgun Team as well as seven Paralympic shooters find themselves in Europe together with separate competitions beginning Sunday.
Fifteen junior shotgun athletes will compete in the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Junior World Cup in Suhl, Germany. USA Shooting’s Paralympic shooting athletes will compete in the last International Paralympic Committee (IPC) World Cup before the start of the 2016 Paralympic Games beginning Sunday in Sczcecin, Poland. The team will finish the trip with the International Shooting Competition of Hanover (Germany) May 6-15.
More than 140 athletes from 35 countries will take their final World Cup shots prior to the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in September. Though U.S. shooters won only one medal at the last IPC Shooting World Cup in March in Bangkok, six Finals appearances and several near-podium finishes prove team members are poised to make a strong showing at this World Cup.
Michael Tagliapietra (Fond du Lac, Wisconsin) won silver in the P5 (Men’s 10m Air Pistol Standard SH1) event in Bangkok, as well as fourth in P3 (Mixed 25m Sport Pistol SH1). Jazmin Almlie-Ryan (Houston, Texas) also had a pair of strong performances, finishing fourth in R4 (Mixed 10m Air Rifle Standing SH2) and sixth in in R5 (Mixed 10m Air Rifle Prone SH2).
John Joss (Corsicana, Texas / U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit) most recently finished in sixth place in Men’s Prone at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Smallbore, shooting scores that would have easily placed him in first in Qualification at the most recent IPC Shooting World Cup. Look for him to have another strong showing in R6 (Mixed 50m Rifle Prone SH1), where he finished in fifth place in March in Bangkok.
Also joining them for both matches are McKenna Dahl (Arlington, Washington), Tammy Delano (Rome, New York), Marco De La Rosa (San Antonio, Texas) and Len Esparza (Cupertino, California).

Getting things underway Sunday in Suhl will be the Men’s Double Trap contingent of Tyler Deyo (Johnstown, Ohio), Hank Garvey (Newburyport, Massachusetts) and Jacob Hochhausler (Tampa, Florida). Garvey competed in Suhl last year finishing 11th and was a junior World Team member in 2015, finishing 19th. He sits in fourth currently after stage 1 of the Olympic Team Trials while Hochhausler sits in fifth.
Next Tuesday, the women’s trap and skeet teams will get their shot at the range and both are loaded with talent. The women’s trap team is comprised of Junior World Champs bronze medalist Ellie Roditis (McKenzie, Tennessee), and 2015 Junior World Cup silver medalist Cheyenne Waldrop (Forest Hill, California) as well as Emma Williams (Savannah, Tennessee) who gets her first taste of international competition.
Women’s skeet will feature 2015 Junior World Championships silver medalist Sydney Carson (North Liberty, Indiana) along with 16-year-old upstart Katie Jacob (Rochester, Michigan) who earned a bronze medal at the season-opening Cyprus World Cup in her first international competition and sits in third place in the Olympic Trials race to fill the second skeet quota. Joining them will be Samantha Simonton (Gainesville, Georgia), who made one of the two Finals during the first stage of Olympic Trials last October.
In Men’s Trap, which is a three-day competition beginning Tuesday, Nationals runner-up and Fall Selection champion Dustin McGowen (Greenwood, Arkansas) is participating along with Ryne Barfield (Poulan, Georgia) and Christopher Haire (Anna, Illinois).
Zachary McBee (College Station, Texas), who finished 11th at Junior World Championships last year, is set to help lead the men in skeet which begins their three-day event Tuesday as well. He’ll compete alongside Aaron Wilson (Lansing, Kansas) who is tied for fourth in the Olympic Trials standings currently. Also present will be Nic Moschetti (Broomfield, Colorado).
The shotgun completion of the Junior World Cup is expected to include as many as 248 athletes.
