Bench testing dialing in the izh7-3

I need to tune my Izh 7-3. If you live in the US what is the ideal brand and model of bench rifle stand for it? The club bench rifle stand's front clamp is too wide for the fore end, so it does not fit. If you use a 7-3, which brand and model you are currently using?

Also I have been having tremendous problem dialing in on the 7-3. The team coach tried to dial in, and reported the same problem.."inconsistency". I "ran out of dial". Rifle was cleaned. Anyone has problem dialing in the 7-3 or 7-4?

Finally, anyone has idea of the total clicks for up/down and left/right for the Izh 7-3 or 7-4? Anyone has to resort to use the extra rail plate to act as a riser for the front sight in order to make it work?

Conradin,

Many of the mechanical front rests used in BR shooting a designed for a 3 inch wide fore-end, so you rifle won't fit. Fore-end BR adaptors that make skinny stocks fit wide BR rests are sold, or you could make one. However, if you are just shooting from the rest to steady the rifle while you adjust the rearsight, could you use a different support (like a sandbag)?

Ok, so the rearsight won't adjust enough to centre the group. How far off centre, and which direction? Yes, you might need to raise either the front ir rearsight if one is non-standard. It can happen that the rearsight is faulty and won't adjust properly.

Unless you are tuning the rifle at a temp in the low 30s F, you will be learning about the performance of the rifle in a temperature range it will never compete in. Think it through. The rifle cold soaks to the ambient temps on the day of the contest, and then wind chill cools lower than that. I lack the ability to test under usefull conditions and Im in the PNW with access to snow. Your best bet it so buy a reputable low temp ammunition such as or similar to Lapua Polar and rezero the gun for the days condition when you get to the race site like everybody else. All anschutz fortner rifles are good enough to clean a biathlon target, its hit miss, not group size that matters. Who cares what groups the best, you need reliability, it needs to go bang when you pull the trigger in very cold conditions. Its a completely different set of requirements that cannot be duplicated outside actual environmental conditions of use. Tuning the gun indoors at 70 ambient isnt its reality. You CAN HOWEVER BASELINE THE GUN........ NOW remember that the Biathlon rifle buttplate is quite large and the gun mounts very differently from a normal position rifle. when standing, the lower hook leg indexes to the armpit and that sets POI, not the sights. if you are chasing the target with the sights, you will fail. Center the sights and adjust the buttplate to get you zeroed. use the sights to correct for changes in conditions. After you zero the gun standing, do the same prone using the upper hook on top of your shoulder. LEAVE THE SIGHTS ALONE BETWEEN THE 2 BASELINE SETUPS. After you can hit the targets reliably in both positions, you can use the sights to compensate for conditions somewhat equally for each position and dials between the 2 positions will be quite small... Also, you dial the gun to you as your construction is different than your coach......

Do you have the ability to bolt a vice down to the table you are shooting off of? If you do, you might want to consider getting one of these when you test ammo.

I have a Cowan Rest that I modified to bolt the hand sling onto it that I can do adjustments to the stand to move POI.

On my Izzies, I put on the Anschutz rear sight and the Fortner adjust rise front site. There are a few options for rear risers to install the Anschutz, I got mine from Marc at Altius.

Thank you. I sold the Izh, but ended up with a Steyr LGB-1. I love it. Now I am thinking about maybe I should get the FWB p75, we'll see.

Don't you think you should learn to ski first?
