Hey guys,

Now that I have my rifle situation somewhat sorted out, I was wondering what the best single resource is for information regarding 10m standing air rifle shooting.

Is there a book/website/blog/guide that I can buy or view online that contains all of the following:
- General Posture
- Aiming Advice
- Coaching Tips
- Training Plans/Schedules
- Brief History of the Event
- Rifle Maintenance
- Pellet Choice/Pellet Type Descriptions
- Clothing/Equipment Recommendations

I may be missing a few things. I'm pretty much looking for what someone would call the "Bible of 10m air rifle."

Anyone have any tips? Love to hear them! I'm not opposed to buying a book either--if thats the best resource.

MEC's Air Rifle Training and Competition will cover the technical aspects, but I'm not sure that there is any printed guide to equipment. Anything in print would be out of date within a few years as manufacturers change their product lines.

C: Just follow the manufacturers guidelines, and if in doubt ask here, someone will chime in.

D: You really have two choices, wadcutter or diabolo style. "Diabolo" is evidently the European word for "wadcutter" :D (I jest, I jest). Starting out just get some wadcutter pellets and trigger time, I recommend getting one big carton of Crosman wadcutters (cheap, not competitive, but useful for not wasting money learning how you and your rifle work together) and after a few thousand shots you can start paying more for premium pellets. The best shooters are very picky about pellets, and they try to not mix lots even within the same brand and model. I don't go that far, but I'm not good enough yet to see a benefit from single lot pellets (and even non lot controlled pellets like RWS Basics will be more accurate than most shooters).

F: Clothing and equipment recommendations is something you probably shouldn't be looking for in a book, things change and different products come and old products go. It is my opinion that any jacket that fits will be better than no jacket, and that goes for the rest of equipment. Obviously some is going to be better than others (spotting scope for example) but you might be shooting on a range where a spotting scope isn't needed (electronic scoring or a 10m target runner system). But a lot of equipment will come down to personal preference and body type, so don't be afraid to ask for input.

E: The history of air rifles goes back 500 years, the history of 10m Air Rifle goes back a bit less than that, but the ISSF has a good timeline of key events: http://www.issf-sports.org/theissf/history.ashx but I think the turning point for modern 10m air rifle was the introduction of the Walther LGR http://www.pilkguns.com/tenp/spwlgr.htm.

I apologize I couldn't address every issue in depth or detail, I doubt that there is one resource that will. But I hope that you can get plugged in to the blogs and organizations that will help you.

No need to apologize, that was an amazing and comprehensive write up. Time and time again, I'm amazed by how receptive this forum is. I think I made a great choice by making an account here--I will continue to tap into this valuable resource for years to come. Maybe one day I'll learn enough to even contribute to the conversation in a meaningful way.

Is there a way to request that your response be stickied to the main page? I've seen other forums pin posts so that they don't get moved down. I think it would be a great idea to pin a comprehensive post about resources and how to get started with air rifle shooting.

No need for stickies, at least in my opinion. I find a lot of resources here from the search function (and even external links back to here from global search engines). You never know when URLs will become dead links or information moved to another place.

There are a couple books out there about position shooting that are really good, photo intensive, but at best they'll let you try to imitate what works for someone else. The one I've been mulling over buying is "Air Rifle Training and Competition" since it was updated last year: http://shop.mec-shot.com/buch-air-rifle ... ec_shop_de I haven't purchased it, but it looks pretty concise.

Dr: Yes, in fact most of the high level air rifle is only standing for 60-shots at a very small dot for the 10!! Hard to get a 10!! Don

This may be a dumb question... But here it goes. In order to compete in 10m precision air rifle, do you need to shoot all three positions? What if I only want to do standing? Is it possible to only compete in standing?

Yes, standing only is the norm. Currently the ISSF mens event is 60 shots standing, women's 40 shots. In Bavaria where I shoot everyone shoots the 40 shot match. The matches are in the evening, usually starting after 7 p.m. so 40 shots is long enough to make a late evening of it.
