SP20 hight of front sight
Just got me a Hämmerli SP20 .32 S&W. When the sights are adjusted for rapid fire I can see the frame of the pistol in my sights. Therefore I want to buy a taller front sight. I know you can get them 1mm or 2mm higher than standard but what is the standard height? Mine are 5 or 6 mm tall so before I order one that is 2mm taller than standard I want to make sure I don't already got one.
Re: SP20 hight of front sight
If it helps, the front sight on my .22 SP20 is 4.25mm tall. Have you tried contacting Walther (they now sell the Haemmerli SP20 and accessories for it)?

Re: SP20 hight of front sight
My SP20 .32 could not be brought down enough with adjustment to achieve POA. To cure this anomaly I made a new front sight from 5 mm. round steel with a locating indentation in the appropriate place.
This new sight is about 8 mm. in height from memory. However the point is that the front sight post on your .32 can be re made to whatever length your needs require. Experiment with longer first and turn it down to the length you need.

Re: SP20 hight of front sight
Thank you Spencer for bringing me back to the original question. My suggestion was a way of accommodating his need for a taller sight, however to stay on topic I am unfortunately not aware of any other solution. The SP20 design appears to be what it is.
Re: SP20 hight of front sight
I had a look through the sights of my CM22M (yes I know it is not an SP20) at the range this morning to find out if I could see the frame of the pistol in the rear notch.
Yes - I can see the frame if the front sight is out of position; i.e. too high in the notch. Now I understand what TB was on about, and a higher front sight to give a higher position of the rear sight should solve his problem.
Interesting, in that I intend to put a wider front sight on my .32GSP, with a bigger, deeper rear sight notch to retain an apparent square of front sight with the wider front sight. Nice to know that seeing the frame in the rear sight notch could be a problem to be aware of.

Re: SP20 hight of front sight
Thanks for all your comments. I was not out to make a new front sight though but just to buy a taller one. I guess that if a standard one is 4.25 mm then my 6 mm is what they call +2 mm.

Re: SP20 hight of front sight
Larrys Guns sell parts for Hammerli SP20 pistols and as well as the 2mm. taller front sight they list an "extra tall" front sight on the bottom of page six of their Hammerli parts catalogue.
The part number of this extra tall is HA1333170. hope this helps.

On my SP20's I found it was not the frame as such but when the rear sight is in the lowest position the rear sight blockTB wrote: When the sights are adjusted for rapid fire I can see the frame of the pistol in my sights.
itself is in view in the bottom of the rear notch as it slopes slightly downhill.
By raising the foresight 2mm it has the effect of levelling the rear sight block and clears the line of sight improving the
sight picture.
One small problem, with a increased fore sight height the pistol angle in the test box has changed and on a medium
grip I had to remove a small amount off the lower rear area.

Yes I think you are right. It is not the frame but the rear sight block. Do you know how tall your +2mm front sight is?David M wrote:On my SP20's I found it was not the frame as such but when the rear sight is in the lowest position the rear sight blockTB wrote: When the sights are adjusted for rapid fire I can see the frame of the pistol in my sights.

Re: SP20 hight of front sight
It is almost certainly going to be +2mm taller than the standard sight. However the fact remains that as long as there is enough rear sight elevation range left ( and it fits in the test box ) front sight height is going to be determined by what is required to remove the distraction presented by the sight block/ frame. As Larrys Guns have both the +2 mm and what is referred to as extra tall it seems a no brainier to choose the longest sight post possible. As it is manufactured by Umarex it will most certainly work with your gun and remove the chance that the +2 still does not provide adequate visual clearance.
As I said in an earlier reply I needed to increase the height of my front sight to allow POA, however I was also aware of the distracting visual sight block/frame image as well. The considerably taller front sight removed both.
Get the tallest front sight option available. You can easily shorten if you need however you cannot extend.

Re: SP20 hight of front sight
The question was never if I should get a +2mm front sight. I asked if I already have one since I don't know the height of a normal size.

Re: SP20 hight of front sight
Ahhh....let me think....2mm shorter than the +2mm you already have.
Re: SP20 hight of front sight
Maybe my English is too bad for explaining my question correctly but In my thread starter I mention that mine are 5 and 6mm. But since I don't know the hight of a standard sight I don't know if I have a standard and a +1mm or a +1mm and a +2mmdeadeyedick wrote:Ahhh....let me think....2mm shorter than the +2mm you already have.

Re: SP20 hight of front sight
I went to my parts bin TB and found two sights one from my own gun and one from a friends SP20.
Two of the front sights measure 10.29 mm in height. I know that the two that are 10.29 mm are from our SP20's and were as supplied with the guns when new. The new sight I made to solve my problem is 13 mm in height. Our sights seem considerably longer than fitted to your pistol. Did you purchase new ? If used maybe the previous owner altered the original sight.
I hope this helps in some way. You might want to e-mail walther direct and ask similar questions.
p.s. your English is perfect.

Re: SP20 hight of front sight
Thanks a lot for this information. I guess you measured the entire front sight from bottom to top. I did only measure the part that is above the frame. However, Now I can use your measurements to compare with mine.deadeyedick wrote:I went to my parts bin TB and found two sights one from my own gun and one from a friends SP20.

Re: SP20 hight of front sight
The part above the frame measures 5 mm on the two 10.29 sights, and I have a third sight that measures 9.29 overall and 4 mm above the frame. good luck.
