Can you remove the right side of an ambi safety and make it a standard safety. It's for a bullseye gun and I never engage the safety anyhow. if i need to make the gun safe i am better off dropping the mag and emptying the chamber anyhow. I don't want the bother of fitting a standard safety.

It falls out when I take the grips off and does not fit all that well? So I am thinking......

Typically no you cannot. The pin that slides through the frame is only half the length and fits into right side thumb safety pin (slotted male to female). It will flop and be loose. I recommend getting a standard GI thumb safety.

Do not run only the left side of your ambi, because it may not function properly. Technically you could be asked to remove that gun from the line by a line safety officer if they noticed the empty hole in the right side.

Anytime you put in a new safety (or any fire control parts) you MUST make sure it passes ALL the function tests! Some filing/fitting may be required, but very easy to do, just be patient and go slow. If you have any doubts take it to a gunsmith! If you don't know what function tests it needs to pass - take it to a gunsmith!

yes you can remove the whole thing ,then replace it with a single left sided one.

A friend showed me how to disassemble a 1911 and we had to gently pry out the safety, I believe from the outside. Mine was also an ambi safety and each side had 2 "fingers" and they mated with each other filling in the gaps between the fingers.

From that exercise I derived that it's easy to remove a safety, but my very knowing friend advised me that a new safety has to be fit to the gun, not a "plug and play" replacement.
