Hi everyone,
My father has a couple of revolvers possibly suited for distinguished revolver he said he'd let me borrow. One is a Ruger Security Six with a 6" barrel, the other is a S&W 686 with the 4" barrel. Do people think one of these will be better than the other for DR?

I would go with the Smith and Wesson any day of the week.
Are 357 Mag guns firing 38 Special ammo allowed?

Yes, .357 mag guns shooting .38 special are OK. The rule book sez:
"The revolver must be capable of chambering and firing a 158-grain round nose or Semi-Wad-cutter .38 Special cartridge."

Most everyone I see is shooting 6" long barrel - better sight radius.
I shoot a 586 6" and love it.

Try them both and see which is best. Accuracy shooting .38 Special ammunition is a .357 S&W Magnum revolver is generally problematic.
The S&W Model 14 seems quite prominent in that event.
