American Fireworks to Begin Granada World Cup
The USA Shooting Team ensured the fireworks continued well into Friday while creating their own celebration of America with two Women's Trap athletes advancing to the finals on day one of the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup in Granada, Spain.
Trap shooter Corey Cogdell equaled an ISSF World Record hitting 75 straight targets in qualifying and finished with a bronze medal in today's Granada World Cup.
Corey Cogdell (Eagle River, Alaska) absent of any major international competition since last summer's Olympic Games, made the event final by running a 75-straight to begin the seven-day World Cup featuring over 1,000 athletes from 78 countries competing in all three Olympic shooting disciplines.
Joining Cogdell in the finals was teammate and young upstart Ashley Carroll (Solvang, Calif.) who would make her first World Cup final in Granada after emerging on the scene in the last year with two victories at the two previous USA Shooting Selection Matches.
Entering the Finals with a World Record score used to mean a lot more in previous years, but in the new ISSF finals format which excludes preliminary scores, Cogdell would have to prove herself all over again. She'd struggle to do so in the 15-shot semifinal, hitting just 10 while dropping four in a row. After dropping four straight, the two-time Olympian and 2008 Olympic bronze medalist was on the verge of losing out on a shot for a medal in a battle with Carroll, down 5 to 4 hits with six shots remaining in the semifinal. Showing her tremendous grit, Cogdell shook off the four-straight misses to crush her final six clays while Carroll would drop three of the final six.
That wouldn't be the end of Cogdell's display of mental fortitude as she'd battle Spain's Fatima Galvez in the bronze-medal match. Tied at 11 after their 15-shot round, they'd go to a single-shot elimination which would go until the eighth shot without a miss with Cogdell finally prevailing despite the backing Galvez had shooting on her home range. The bronze is the fourth World Cup medal of Cogdell's career.
Zuzana Stefecekova of Slovakia would eventually earn the gold medal competing in her first World Cup final over China's Yi Wang.
Rachael Heiden (Clinton, Mich.) finished one shot off the pace for a possible berth in the finals shooting a 69/75 to finish 21st overall. As an MQS (extra shooter) Miranda Wilder (Diana, Texas) shot a great score of 72 while Amber Culwell (Rosebud, Ark.) got her World Cup career started with a score of 61.
The U.S. Men's Trap Team got underway Friday as well with Jake Wallace (Castiac, Calif.) and John Mullins (Port Orchard, Wash.) putting themselves in good position with scores of 49 and 48, respectively, through two rounds. Spring Selection champ Matt Gossett (Springville, Ala.) struggled a bit on day one with five total misses and will have some work to do to get back into the mix for Saturday's final three rounds and finals. Currently, there are 71 shooters with a 46 or higher including four perfect scores. Shooting for a minimum qualifying score (extra shooter) score, Austin Odom (Benton, Ark.) scored a 48/50 while competing in his first World Cup event.
Rifle and Pistol events get underway from Granada as well on Saturday with Men's 10m Air Rifle, Women's 25m Sport Pistol and Men's 50m Free Pistol. Hopes are highest in Air Rifle with the emergence of young guns Dempster Christenson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Connor Davis (Shelbyville, Ky.). Dempster earned his first World Cup medal after taking a silver medal away from the World Cup USA in Ft. Benning, Ga., in May. Davis, meanwhile, has seen his stock rise tremendously following a stellar freshman campaign as a Kentucky rifle shooter. He was fourth at the NCAA Rifle Championships and recently earned a gold medal against top junior-level competition at the prestigious Meeting of the Shooting Hopes Match in Pilsen, Czech Republic. He's shown ability throughout 2013 to rise for the big moment and none would be bigger than a finals appearance in just his second World Cup.
Competing in the Women's 25m Sport Pistol event includes Teresa Meyer-Chambers (Dearborn, Mich.) Brenda Silva(Snowflake, Ariz.) and Sandra Uptagrafft (Phenix City, Ala.). The American squad of Free Pistol shooters includes: Brian Beaman (Selby, S.D.); Will Brown (Twin Falls, Idaho); Jay Shi (Phoenix, Ariz.); Daryl Szarenski (Seale, Ala.); and Jason Turner (Rochester, N.Y.).
