what would be the best 9 mm handgun for target shooting

What event? As with everything, there are trade offs.

Tnx! I'm looking for accuracy and reliability

Accuracy at what distance?
Reliability with what ammo?

Also, what kind of budget did you have in mind?

Going to shoot with iron sights? or a dot?

I use iron sights and would like to spend $500-$800.

If you are looking to shoot CMP events - Beretta 92

I shot a Sig Sauer the other day. It was a 45 but had the best trigger I had ever felt in a production gun. If their 9mm is even close to it, I would take a look at one of those.

which part of 'what event' are you having trouble with?

My questions to the OP are curious as to using a 9mm.
in centerfire bullseye shooting ?
in going for your distinguished pistol badge ?
in punching paper up to 50yds for the fun of it ?
in using one or a two handed hold(weight becomes a factor) ?

In your price range you could pick up a used 92FS and have a KKM barrel and trigger work done and have a solid accurate 9mm.
That is if your hand likes the 92 grip.

Another pistol to consider is an EAA Witness.
My current CCW pistol is an EAA Witness P-S
It is scary accurate at 25yds.
If you can find one for about $300. it is the best BANG FOR THE BUCK...

On that budget you won't get the best 9mm.
Plan on a top quality competition 9mm costing $2500-$3500.
Sig X5 or X6, P210 legend, Smith Custom shop 952 or fully tricked 1911.

Your budget is going to make things difficult.
I have a custom 1911 9mm built for Bullseye and it is very accurate at 50yd and a pleasure to shoot at 25 but you are looking at well over $1k.

I have owned a vast array of 9mm pistols and while RO duty fired more types I can remember as well.
I dont care for action shooting much so most of my quest has been for accuracy shooting with one hand.

At one time I bought a 3500 euro Sphinx, used Sig p210 various other types.

I gave all of these up when I fired a Benelli MP3S in 9mm.
I was so impressed i bought one in 32 WC caliber.

Dont know why exactly ( low boreline, trigger dynamics, layout topography ???) ...whatever the reason, it just shoots so well nobody who has tried it can believe it.

In these parts they can be had for 400 to 900 Euro.

I had never heard of this pistol so I did some research. There is an earlier post on TargetTalk (here: viewtopic.php?t=8040 ) that says it is a target version of the Benelli B76.

Is that correct? Back in the day, I loved the ideas used in the B76 but I never bought one because I felt the execution was sub-par. I used to think "It's too bad they don't make a target version of this. That would be something." Even with that attitude, I've long regretted not buying a B76 back when they were easily available.

If the Benelli MP3S is, indeed, a target version of the B76 then I'd love to have one and will start searching.

Although a very good 9mm pistol is a great start, the secret is in a accurate 9mm load.
They are difficult cartridge's to load lead projectiles in and get very good results.
Lots of time and testing will eventually pay off with good results.
