Need advice / information about Anschütz 1903

Hi, I have a simple question:

Could and Anschütz 1903 be use to practice and compete at national level in the 50 Meter Rifle (the olympic style with ISSF rules). Is it accurate enough for that discipline (thinking of a national competition) or was it designed for another type of shooting (different discipline), and if so which discipline?.

I do not know about 50 m with .22LR rifles, but I do practice and shot in 10mts airgun nationals, due to the fact I want to start the R50 discipline with a .22LR carbine, another shooter offer me an 1903 anschutz new (no use at all).
But I doubt It is proper for that kind of competitions. I already shoot air rifle at 10 meters and of course have the shooting jacket, pants and boots (my current score is around 570/580 over 600 possible), I do not want to buy a gun that I would need to change soon because I out shoot the guns potential (I don't want that the rifle limits my score).
Any help regarding these mater will be very appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your help
Nicolas

1903 is capable of holding a pretty tight group, if it was me I would make sure it has a free rifle buttplate, or keep in mind that if you want to be able to adapt the rifle to your positions easily you will need a free rifle buttplate.

the 1903 is as I recall that was/is a Standard rifle verson. an excellent rifle that was intended for a rifle event sans the fancy attachments of a free rifle. The beauty of the model 54 action anschutz rifle line is the ability to freely swap barreled actions into other anschutz stocks. Mainly the woodys and the laminates. Free rifle stocks can be had used and new on ebay (search terms anschutz) and other gun related sites. Now if your 1903 has an adjustable cheek piece you may just need the butt assembly..Again ebay, champions choice, etc you can find butt assenblies. Now some stock shorting WILL be required to get a good length of pull depending on the assembly bought.. ..does not have to be an anschutz brand either..butt//lol. My choice would be to get a complete woody stock to just drop in your action. You can add weights to the stock or get a adjustable weight system to bring the slightly lighter action-barrel of the standard rifle up to the general free rifle weight as you get used to the position and build you strength up ( and you will need it in the short term as you develop the muscle and muscle memory for the 3 postions.

The 1903 is a 64, not 54 action

Guest is right .... 1903 is a 64 action
So is 2centsworth ... 54 action is fantastic.

My opinion:
A 1903 is a good rifle for a beginner/intermediate level shooter. If I take your scores at Air, I think you are beyond intermediate. I think of the 1903 as a great club level rifle. My youngest daughter, at your level last year shot a 1903 in the JO's as a J3 last year and placed third in that age group.

Right after that we went to a 1907 action (in a 1913 stock)... the model 54. I don't know your size/age, but if you are a smaller shooter maybe look at the 1912 ... it is a 1907 in a very nice thumbhole stock. If you're a bit bigger, you can probably easily handle a 1913 stock (about a pound heavier than the 1912) or even an ALU stock.

By all means, shoot what you have now (the 1903, it is plenty accurate), but if you start getting to like SBR and maybe want to continue to shoot after high school, then look at the match 54 action (1907, 1912 & 1913 guns), or possibly the 2000 series actions (to me, a touch expensive).

Here's a suggestion ... go download the Anschutz catalog as they have all the guns w/ action types listed, and for a good guess on price ranges hit the Champions Choice website. But remember there are other vendors .... Champions Shooters Supply, International Shooters Service, etc. Call around and look for the best price. (We've had good luck getting 1912's in LH at ISS)

In short, the series 54 and series 2000 actions will take you as far as you want to go, the 1903 series 64 is a great starter.

Remember ... my $0.02

The 1903 uses a 64 action, which is the lighter of the smallbore actions. While there are some 1903 rifles that shoot very well, you will not find the top shooters using this action/rifle. Long term, you would be better off with a heavier action, either a 1913 or a 2013.
