I'm interested in knowing how many instructors and/or coaches own a professional liability insurance policy, and for how much.
Our club insurance is apparently good for $1 million per incident, but that does not protect the individual instructor or coach if they are directly accused of gross negligence - note the word "accused".
Aside from it being good business sense to cover yourself with professional liability insurance, it may soften some of the noise we're getting from our club's board of directors about liability. Since our club holds a $1 million policy, the instructor/coach's policy would name the club as an addiitonal insured party, providing back-to-back coverage.
However, Lockton Risk Services, the insurance provider for the NRA and USAS charges $310 per year for this level of coverage. As a volunteer, that's a stiff bit of change to cough up each year for a voluntary no-pay position. Is anyone paying any less for similar coverage?
I know many are shaking their heads left and right...and so are we, but it's something we are being forced to consider as a part of an overall training policy. Your input is appreciated!
