PCP rifle vs. pistol noise level

Post by Chris Bauer »

I am interested in getting an air rifle for backyard practice.

I have never shot an air rifle. My question is the noise level. At, let's say, 500 feet/sec velocity, is PCP air rifle more quiet than PCP air pistol due to its longer barrel?

I could not tell the sound noise difference listening to ISSF-Sport TV section on air rifle competition vs. air pistol competition.

Thanks.

I'm not really sure what you're looking for here.

You say you've never shot an air rifle, so I'm assuming you don't REALLY want a full match PCP air rifle. The price alone would scare ME off!

I suggest you find a good used Beeman R7 "springer". They are great fun to shoot, accurate, and very quiet. It will give you a lifetime of service.

I have a bunch of air rifles and it's my favorite to play with. Don't get suckered into buying one of the high powered air rifles. They are expensive and difficult to shoot well.

I am interested in the PCP air rifle noise level vs. PCP air pistol.

I have shot R7 before. The vibration from the springer on my cheek bone to my ear is unbearable. I had decreased hearing every time I should that R7. It was surely fun to shoot, but my ears just could not bear the vibration recoil.

So, yes, I am asking the noise level of PCP air rifle vs. PCP air pistol at 500 fps velocity.

AR matches are _significantly_ louder than AP. Why, I couldn't say for sure.

At same velocity, wouldn't air rifle be less noisy then air pistol? Wouldn't air rifle longer barrel acts as an extended "shroud" on air pistol, therefore, less noisy?

Interesting problem with your ear. I had never heard of anything like it.

Benjamin has just come out with a PCP/CO2 rifle called the Discovery at a reasonable price. I don't know if the power level is adjustable to reduce noise. I have CO2 Crosman pistol and it's much louder than my Pardini K60 match gun. Both are louder than my Pardini K58 single stroke pneumatic or my spring guns.

Since you're only shooting in the backyard, three pumps on a Benjamin 392 rifle is very quiet and half the price of the above mentioned gun.

If you're only concerned with noise, the Gammo Whisper is a pump rifle, with a build in factory silencer. You can also get an Air Venturi Ram Air Gas Spring to replace the metal spring, eliminating spring fatigue and rattle, making it even more quiet and consistent.

It's _not_ a target rifle by _any_ means. It's a quiet 1000 FPS varmint killer and plinker.
