This response is a little on target, and a little off target. The following is a list of books I have collected, or which have been recommended to me, over the years. Some are on high power shooting, some on international shooting, some on pistol shooting, some on the history of the shooting sports, and some on mental issues, not necessarily related just to shooting. Most, I have found to be helpful. No one has the one true path to enlightenment. Some rifle shooters have a better handle on mental management than pistol shooters, and vice versa.

I am double Distinguished; double President's Hundred; have two winning National Trophy (Dogs of War) medals; have Distinguished Skirmisher and Distinguished Revolver badges from the North-South Skirmish Association; and have the International Master badge from the U.S. International Muzzle Loading Team. I am also older than dirt. I found getting the pistol badges much harder than the rifle ones. Even on a good day, pistol has always been a struggle for me, where as when picking up a rifle I always felt that God was in his heaven and all was right with the world. Having said that, I think that cross training between arms and shooting disciplines is excellent training, and that each arm and discipline can teach the shooter something that the others do not. Once one has mastered the "basics" of shooting, mental management is THE universal issue in shooting, whether one shoots pistol or rifle, international or NRA. Entirely too many people concentrate on "technique," tools, and loading, rather than mastery of themselves, and then wonder why they do not advance in the sport. I became a competitive shooter when I wandered into the college rifle range and the ROTC sergeant strapped me into smallbore gear and let me shoot several targets. Since I thought that I was a "shooter," I was not happy with the results, and thought that I would come back until I shot a score that I was happy with. I'm still trying, and will probably still be trying until the day that I die.

Reading List for Shooting

(The items marked with an * I have and have read. The others I'm still working on getting.) Just because a book is dated doesn't mean that the author doesn't have something very interesting to tell you. The books by Ezekiel Baker (1823) and W. Milton Farrow (1882) are particularly interesting in this respect. Farrow probably understood the psychological game as well as anyone today does.

Very nice library!

Hi Don.

I used to think that I had a nice shooting library. I take my hat off to your's. I agree with the statement you made about publication date: just because it is old, doesn't mean that you can't learn something from it.

The problem that I see with most shooting manuals is that a lot is written as if the idea presented was gospel. Art is written as science, which for the most part isn't true. I think that's where the value of reading A LOT of different sources proves itself. You start to see common threads of "truth" and can start to build technique which is sound.

I'm very pleased to see that you have the Canadian coaching manuals in your library, even though you haven't read them. The coaching theory manuals are now fully updated and the focus has changed. Skill development is better explained. Also, there is some good information on long-term athlete development, which would be a good supplement. You can go to http://www.ltad.ca/content/home.asp for downloads and such.

So, now I'm jealous. I need to start cruising Amazon and eBay for more books. Someone else is winning the library race. ;-)

Step 1/ ask your coach which books/tapes he/she recommends
- if you don't have a coach; get one

Step 2/ see step 1

Don,
Thanks very much for your comprehensive book and article listing. I am very interested in developing the mental aspects of shooting (air rifle and pistol and trap shooting). Which of the books and articles that you have read would you recommend? I am looking for those that have broad application to all the shooting sports. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Don,

Also thanks for the comprehensive list of materials. I will be checking some of these in the near future.

To the OP,

I found a cheap copy of Competitive Shooting by Yur Yev and have found it to be my bible. I frequent that book many times in almost every area of shooting practice. For a more subjective approach, rather scientific, try AMU's Pistol Manual and The Pistol Shooter's Treasury.

And quite a marvelous book it is. Hope you got it at a reasonable price as they are now scarce. NRA should think about doing a new printing, and maybe a soft binding to encourage people to write in it and make notes.

The Germans have a new one on air pistol shooting but I don't think the English translation is ready quite yet.

I personally like the Lanny Bassham book (with winning in mind), Terry Orlicks one that Don mentions as well as the other shooting specific one, the details of which I forget (but could be in Dons list too). I then also have more general sport psychology / sport motivation books by Frank Dick and others.

The key is to find something that clicks with you and presses the right buttons. The Bassham book is great because it's small and you can re-read it quickly to get pointers and refresh yourself. Other than that pop down your library and read whatever you can find in book stores or online.

to whinge my old, tried and tested whinge...
which books/tapes does your coach recommend?

If you don't have a coach, get one: even if it is for a one-off weekend session.
It will be much cheaper (and more PRODUCTIVE) than any amount you spend on a collection of books/tapes for self-delusion/deception/...

The bad news is that 'what you think you see/do/need' and 'what you actually see/do/need' are not the same - ah! the benefits of an outside observer (also called a coach)

I am told it will be ready by the World Championships at the end of July (that's the plan anyway).

Indeed, but it covers much more than just air pistol. I'm sure I saw pictures in it of something like a scatt session for rapid fire, but my German isn't good enough to have read the text, just look at the pictures :)

Resurrecting a long-dead thread....

Did the English translation ever get completed?
