I'm new to AP and dont really have any direction or indication on when and how to clean an air pistol. I always kept my father's shotgun and .22 rimmy spotless, but am not sure what to do with my IZH. What's the protocol? I presume some silicone oil on the external bits and a bit on a few shoot-thru felts every 1000 pellets or so?? Is there anything else I'm missing or am I neglecting the gun? Airguns by their nature dont gunk up as quick as cartridge guns anyway so I wouldnt think they need as much attention?

A drop of oil in the pump chamber every few thousand shots. Same for the pivots on the pump mechanism. That is about all it really needs. Cleaning the barrel is rarely needed with the slow speeds of the pellets from this gun. When cleaning, a pull-through will do far less damage than a rod -- even then, just a couple of patches is about all it needs.

Do not be afraid to go at the grip with a rasp. The grips are built for "any hand" (meaning no ones actual hand) and must be worked down to a comfortable fit for your hand. If you take off too much, some Elmer's wood putty will fix the problem.
