I keep hearing about yoga breathing / tia chi breathing ie in through the nose and out through the mouth.
What I don't understand is the mechanics of why this is important.
Any one have any ideas ?

Rather than trying to understand why it works, just try it and see whether it works (for you).

The mechanics have more to do with your mental set than actually lowering your pulse.
Lowering the pulse can be done through "belly breathing" without regard to how you are breating in or out.
The in through the nose and out through the mouth technique gives you something to focus on (other than your past shots) to help get your mind off what has gone befoer, or is to come in the future. Helps put you in the "now", so you can go back to you pre-shot routine for the next shot in a calm mental state.
At least that's how I understand it, and use/teach it.
