2005 Summer Camps Bring New Faces and New Places - As usual, the summer of 2005 sent the Civilian Marksmanship Program on the road as the Junior Three-Position Summer Camp program traveled across the country to bring marksmanship instruction to youth. Again under the guidance of Dr. Dan Durben, the staff had many new faces among the counselor ranks but that didn’t slow anyone down as the summer got underway.

A Summer Commemorated in Rich German Tradition - The oldest German shooting club was established in 1139, and with it many rich shooting traditions began. One of those traditions made its’ way into the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s 2005 Junior Three-Position Summer Camps for the first time. Dr. Dan Durben, CMP Camp Director, wanted to commemorate each of the camps with a traditional painted wooden target similar to the ones that hang in German shooting clubs still today.

Montgomery Bell Academy Classic. The 11th Annual Montgomery Bell Classic will be held on the weekend of October 14-16, 2005 in Nashville, TN. A three-position match will be the main event, but the Montgomery Bell Classic will also feature an Open International Standing Match and position rifle clinics. Gary Anderson Invitational. The dates for the 2005 Gary Anderson Invitational, sponsored by the Civilian Marksmanship Program, Northside High School, and the Wolf Creek Shooting Club Inc. have been announced. The match will be held at the Pool Range Complex at Fort Benning, GA, and will take place on the weekends of December 2-4 and December 9-11, 2005. Delaware Military Academy Cadet Gaining Fame. Joshua Loper, a cadet at the Delaware Military Academy, won first place in rifle and second place in pistol at the New Jersey Rifle and Pistol Competitions held at the Quinton Sportsman’s Club in Salem County, NJ on June 5th and July 3rd, 2005. The 15-year-old won the Silhouette Rifle competition with an impressive 36 out of 40 possible hits with his CMP Kimber Government Model .22 Target Rifle.

The CMP is currently taking applications for the following open CMP State Jr Director Positions: Colorado, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, New York, North Dakota, Texas and Vermont. Coach Training School (Smallbore/Air Rifle) Offered in TN. Cherokee Rod and Gun Club in Kingsport, TN will offer a Coach Training School on October 22-23, 2005. Kingsport is in East Tennessee and is easily accessible by interstate I-40 from Virginia, Kentucky, and North Carolina. Cherokee Rod and Gun club has one of the best junior/youth riflery programs in the state of Tennessee. Each year for the past four years, they have sent one or more juniors to the National Junior Smallbore Camp at Camp Perry, Ohio. Each year, a member of the club has worked as a volunteer at Camp Perry at the same time. The spark plug at Cherokee and a leader of the youth programs is NRA Instructor and Certified Coach, Bob Camponovo. If any club or high school coaches want to see how to run a top notch junior club program, they should attend this school. The Coach Training School will be taught by NRA/CMP/USA Shooting Certified Coaches who are members of the NRA National Coach Development Staff. It will cover all aspects of smallbore and air rifle coaching and team development. 200th RED HORSE Welcomed Home in Grand Style - Family members, local community leaders, and area residents all came out on August 18, 2005 to welcome home the Air National Guard 200th RED HORSE Squadron who deployed for Iraq in early January of this year.
The entire Squadron made it home safely after months of providing engineering and construction support for the U.S. forces and their allies in Iraq. The 200th RED HORSE Squadron is based at Camp Perry, home of the CMP and National Matches.
