I think cheekpiece design has improved over the years. I understand that some vintage aftermarket stocks were deliberately made oversize to allow the end user to customise the fit, but I've found the sloping cheekpieces that were popular at the time to be less than ideal.
Cheekpiece shape was discussed recently here: http://www.targettalk.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=52139 There is a trend for a sharper cheekpiece to really dig in under the cheekbone. If you prefer the shape of the custom stocks to the 40X marksman, and aren't afraid to modify them, then with rasps, chisels, and plastic wood you should be able to get a good face fit.
