4-H Silhouette - NRA Rule Change

While some of us expected to see the rule change come about, I think most felt NRA would wait until the next book printing.

In 4-H we shoot "Sporter" Air Rifle Silhouette ... Last year NRA had made a rule change allowing Pre-Charged Airguns in the sporter class.

3.3(b) Sporter Air Rifle:
Any unaltered factory sporter air rifle
that is or was a catalogue item, readily available over
the counter to the general public, weighing no more than
11 pounds, with scope and mounts.

The 2006 Rule Changes have changed rule 3.3 back to the 2003 rules:

3.3 Silhouette Air Rifle:

(a) Target Air Rifle: Any unaltered factory target air rifle
designed for U.S. and International 10 meter
competition, (i.e., as produced or sold by Anschutz,
Beeman, Crossman, Daisy, Fienwerkbau, RWS, Steyr
and Walther). Use of scopes or iron sights, including
diopter sights is allowed. Any older gun may be
brought up to current factory specifications using only
factory catalogue barrel weights.

(b) Sporter Air Rifle: Any unaltered factory sporter air
rifle that is or was a catalogue item, readily available
over the counter to the general public, weighing no
more than 11 pounds, with a scope and mounts. Rifles
utilizing pre-charged systems of any kind other than
12.0 gram disposable CO2 units are prohibited.

(c) Open Air Rifle: Any air rifle weighing no more than
16 lbs. with scope and mounts. Length of barrel and
action measured from the rear of the metal action or
air chamber to the end of the muzzle, including any
extension, must not exceed 40". Rifle may utilize any
self-contained or externally-charged compressed air
system, but such system musts be completely self contained
at the time of firing. Hook buttplates are
prohibited.

All air rifles not meeting Rules 3.3(a) or
3.3(b) will be fired in the Open Air Rifle category.

The storage of reservoir tanks for either compressed
air or CO2 is prohibited on the firing line or in
adjacent spectator areas. (See Rule 9.9.1.)

This change in (b) means that the 888's and XSV40's are not Sporter Silhouette guns anymore. Crosman C2000 owners rejoice .... but you'll have to bring and change the cylinders every 10 shots out in the sun. Can you have those small "storage" tanks on the line?????

I've sent an email to the 4-H National folks with a suggestion to either:
1) Make darn sure everyone knows of the rule change
2) Change the 4-H event to a "Target" class.

I'd suggest that all who have an interest voice your opinion to Jim Simms and have him forward your opinion to the appropriate person.

I don't think this change will matter much. The distances used in Air RIFLE silhouette are so far that an 888 isn't a good choice anyway. The single pump air rifles shooting at 900 plus feet per second are the way to go anyway. This forces you to have two rifles per team member at the 4H Nationals in Air RIfle. It was effectively that way in Smallbore anyway. Most Silhouette guns aren't good for 3-position, and most 3-position guns aren't good for Silhouette either. Just write the NRA and ask for 6 RWS Model 48's and 8 Air Rifle scopes in order to make your county competitive because of the rule change that they made. Use the Grant application form.

Mike .... wouldn't that be nice? For some reason here in NM and I hear in other states putting "compete" in a FONRA grant tends to move it down in the list. We use the term "Advanced Marksmanship Training"......

I have XSV40's that I was planning to scope out and bring for silhouette ... We do use the 888's for 3-P
