China National Games - another crossfire :-0

Post by Bill Poole »

China's quadrennial "National Games" are going on in Nanjing this week. it includes more sports and events than the olympics and occurs the year after. They are tracking medal count by province.

http://10games.sports.cn/ has pretty good coverage of shooting, several articles per day, but it takes a a huge amount of patience to try to read it with machine translation. http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/sports.htm has a few articles.

TAN ZongLiang CROSSFIRED! 50m free pistol, in the article the mentioned by name our american hero who did that too. He ended up with 549 and did not make the finals

TAN ZongLiang won air pistol a few days ago, 586 in the qual.

CHEN YongQiang (whose name means "forever strong" but sounds almost exactly the same as the words "uses a gun" ) shot a 591 in Rapid Fire Pistol!!!! they did not mention if he was using a .22 LR but they mentioned he beat the previous world record of 589!

JIA ZhanBo, CHEN Ying and TAO LuNa all did poorly in their respective events.

A whole buncha names I did not recognize won various matches... so I guess we'll be seeing a new or wider batch of competition in the years leading up to 2008..... where we Americans will beat them all :)

If I find anything else interesting, I'll post it

more info: http://english.peopledaily.com.cn/20051 ... 16303.html

"Chinese Shooting officials were happy to see young guns sweep onto the podiums while none of the Athens' big names, like Du Li, Zhu Qinan and Jia Zhanbo, managed a final berth.

A high school student Cao Yifei of Sichuan, 17, won the men's rifle prone with a national record of 702.7 points and the men's trap title went to 17-year-old Yu Xiaokai.

All the title winners would automatically become candidates for the Olympic shooting team, said a jubilant national head coach Wang Yifu. "

Dang, they got a serious junior team there too

singapore to be exact.

one of the articles was quite interesting. it talked about home ground disadvantage. something that they believe exists in shooting and archery sports. looking back i think they have a point my personal best was achieved at another range.
