I have a M-14-4 Target Master with the target sights, hammer and triger. I have been useing it for fun and mostly with a 6 o'clock hold. I have been thinking about also useing it for CF in USAS matches. My problem is that when I try to shoot center hold at 25m I find that I bottom out the rear sight and still do not have a center group, (high 9's & 8's). It is also very hard to pick up the sights as the rear sight is very small. What would some of you do to solve the above problems? Do any of you know of a replacment rear sight that will give me a better sight picture and the need adjustments to find center hold.

I haven't tried one myself but they look very good and aren't very expensive at all. I originally put a Millet rear sight on mine, which while an improvement over the stock sight I did not feel it had a large enough rear sight blade. I ended up going to an Aristrocrat rib which has a really nice large rear sight blade and also has a 3 position rear sight adjustment that makes switching from a sub-6 hold on the precision target to a center hold on the duel target a snap.

M14 alternative sight
Austin Behlert (gunsmith) made a rear sight for the Model 14 that provided greater downward travel . It is a "drop-in" replacement (at least on my 14-3). I had the same problem as you with the original S&W rear sight. The Behlert sight allows me to use a centre hold. The bad news is that the sight is no longer made and so you will have to look for a used one.

Another option that I opted for years ago is to replace your S&W rear with a Millet rear sight. It has a true "target" blade (on the the Target Model) and, at least the older sight on my 14, allows for a center hold at any range. I also think it's pretty cost effective compared with other options. It's available from Brownell, Midway, and others. Note: be sure you read the selection chart correctly.

what is the sight blade height presently? Measure the height from the top edge to the bottom in the windage way (groove). S&W blades are available in heights (if memory serves me) .126, .146, .160
The Weigand sight is on the high side. If you have a medium, put in the low. Or you could change or modify the front blade. Or shoot at 6 o'clock.
