Air Pistol Grip Question

I would like to know if the thumb should resting on a 'shelf' on the pistol grip. What is the typical 'configuration' for forming the grip to the thumb?

I 'think' the thumb should just be resting lightly on the shelf and not be gripping it. I filed my grip down because my thumb joint was digging slightly into my grip originally. I also seem to recall that was what was done with my FP grip when it was done by the coach who fitted and customised it for me.
