When I shot on a military team I shot whatever they gave me without question. I knew the gunsmiths built good guns and I only had to do my part to shoot well. None of the weapons I shot really fit me very well but I never had a choice.
Now I am a civilian and I get to buy my own equipment. The "best" pistol may or may not be the best for an individual shooter. Start out with whatever you can afford and as you shoot, try as many guns as you can get your hands on. Eventually you will find the right gun for you.
This is a hobby for most of us. You want to maximise the fun factor of your hobby and you can do that by using good equipment that fits correctly. I'm not a competitive rifle shooter anymore but I have an old FWB 300 rifle that I've had for many years. I love that rifle and enjoy shooting it because, while it isn't current technology, it is extremly well made and fun to shoot. I shoot a SAM air pistol now because it fits but I still have an FWB 65 and a Pardini P10 in the safe.
A new shooter can often find bargins in used match pistols. Usually the previous owners maintained them well and you can send them in for service if a problem does come up. Many of the older pistols are still a lot of fun to shoot and if the top shooters picked them up again they would be winning matches again.

Objective: get lots of good shots downrange, get average number of 10's up as high as you can.
Method: whatever suits at the time.
Do the research, ask your questions, and don't forget to apply your common sense!
For instance:
MSN route planner - its very reliable...
(you must all try this, folks, it's hilarious)
1. Click here: http://mappoint.msn.com/DirectionsFind.aspx
2. Then change the "Address in" box to Norway
3. In the first "City" box enter: haugesund
4. Change the End "Address In" box to Norway
5. In the "City" box enter: trondheim
6. Click "Get Directions"
And MSN is the expert in its field... right?
ps/ I agree with most if not all of what the other people are saying.
Or in other words - there's three rules for getting the best equipment to shoot Xs all the time - unfortunately, nobody can agree on the first two and nobody knows the third...
