2004 FINAL OLYMPIC SHOTGUN TEAM TRIALS

FORT BENNING, Ga. – The first day of men and women’s skeet matches came and went without so much as a leader change at the Hook range on Thursday. The U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit’s Sgt. 1st Class Todd Graves and Air Force’s Lt. Co. Bill Roy didn’t leave any room for an underdog to sneak into the mix, as they both continued their pursuit for a position on the 2004 Olympic Team.

Roy, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Graves, of Cusseta, Ga., both hit 95 out of a 100 possible targets to widen their lead to three points over USAMU’s Sgt. 1st Class Shawn Dulohery. Dulohery (Columbus, Ga.) keeps them on their toes, though, after hitting a 93, and positioning himself in third. Randy Sotowa (Arcadia, Calif.) moved up a couple places from the Fall Olympic Team Trials after hitting a 94 , while Allen Treadwell (Seligman, Mo.), who initially was tied for second, moved into fourth after struggling with his first and last rounds on Field 1.

Treadwell wasn’t the only shooter who had a difficult time on Field 1. Haley Dunn, of Eddyville, Iowa, would have had a great run at the top spot in women’s skeet if it hadn’t been for missing a total of 10 targets on that first field. Dunn finished with a 90 for the day, while leader Connie Smotek (Lyons, Texas) finished with a 92 and jumped to a five-point total lead over Dunn.

Smotek is a 1992 Olympian looking to make her resurgence into the sport. While, Dunn, who only started shooting in 1992, is looking for a chance to break out of the junior women’s events and prove she can compete with the best this nation has to offer. However, there is only one spot open to women’s skeet and still two days of competition left.

Brandie Neal (Spencer, Ind.) finished with an 89, dropping her to 11 points behind the leader, while Leigh Ann Crozier shot the highest score of the day among the women with a 93 -- only to find herself still 13 points out of the top position.
