Using barrel weights and where to attach them

Post by updawgs »

Is there any rhyme or reason on where along the rail to attach barrel weights? You'd think people would want them close to the front sight to reduce front shake, but looking at ISSF/WC footage, most competitors are putting them near the midpoint or closer to the grip.

I suspect most of them just experiment until they find a configuration they are comfortable with. It does suggest that they and their coaches don't understand the physics very well:

The subject of weights gets to be very personal. While most people think the weights are most effective near the muzzle, that's a very simplistic view. Weights end up where they do on a pistol because the total weight of the gun as well as the polar inertial moment of the gun are what is being changed. The weights are there for total stability as interafaced with the shooter. On the FWB P44, there is a sliding weight above the barrel riding on 2 rods. they make 2 different weights and rod sets. The rods are made of either steel or aluminum. Why so many mix and match possibilities? Everybody is different, and providing a near infinite ability to tune how it feels in your hand really matters.

Any correlation between the weight of the air pistol/barrel weights and the grip pressure?
