First shot = money. Why?

Post by homebrw »

Brand new shooter here...but totally addicted! I'm soon to be 54. I love this FWB P8X!

Is it normal that almost every time I load a fresh target and shoot my first shot it is a 9 or 10? Like 70% of the time or more. What are the mechanics behind that if any?

BTW, I'm not that good. Most of my 10 shot rounds are in the low to mid 70s. My best is 83, but I only have two rounds +80. I started shooting (10m air pistol...lifetime powder pistol shooter) 3 days ago, and I have shot about 25 targets.

How many is too many 10m ten shot rounds in a day? I've shot 14 today.

I got my range with backer board setup in the basement yesterday. Today I added better lighting, and I am rather consistent since the better lighting: last 6 since good lighting 72-75.

So fun.

Thanks,
Chris

Correction. I've shot 200 pellets today, so 19 targets and a few extra.

Your first shot is a good shot because you are shooting with no pressure; the "empty mind" of Zen. Trying to follow that shot is what messes you up. Welcome to what it's like.

Just take 10shots and don't look at the target until you change it out. Make each shot as perfect as can be. I wouldn't hold the Pistol up for more than 5 seconds though, think I am 3-4 seconds once the pistol leaves the rest until the shot is either made or aborted.

Doesn't the "Money Shot" mean something else in the porn industry?

Or, as suggested, are they relaxed afterword?

Ah. Ok. Makes sense. I started tracking. 5 of last 6 rounds = 9 or 10 on first shot. I have been walking down to check the shots. I'll try it without verification.

My first target not verifying I shot an 83! with 3 in the 10 ring (all touching center 10 even).

You are almost in the 90's, now to target a certain part of your shooting process and specifically be conscious of it and work on improving it or repeating it the same way each time for each shot. Breathing, bringing the front sight on target, blinking, grip and tension, arm movement to control wobble, or just your stance for natural point of aim. Pick one and work on it, if you feel better, the shot feels better, or the scores improve then incorporate it into your routine and work on the next item. Maybe 3-6 targets of 10shots each as the trial testing period. As you have seen your mind can be your enemy, stay in control of your thoughts and direct your attention to the relevant process at hand. Make notes at the end of each practice session or target, my memory is horrible and sometimes this helps me from relearning what previously worked. Can dumb it down later on and basically make a cheat cheat of thoughts/tips to help you relax and concentrate before starting a match.

You asked about how many shots per day, as many as you want as long as they have value to them. Shooting when your tired or until sore doesn't have any value except show you your fatigue limits. Maybe 1 60shot match around 8am, then possibly another after lunch. This seems to be the most popular times for matches and can help ready your body and routine for when you do attend one. Stick to the typical time limits for a match, 15 minutes practice/warmup and afterwards a 1:15 for the record 60shots.

Awesome advice. Thanks so much for taking the time. I have several more rounds in the 80s today and yesterday so I'm feeling progress. But it definitely doesn't feel completely repeatable. I'll work on the one-thing ata time list you provided.

Thanks again,
Chris
