If you are in mainland UK, you will not be allowed to own/use a cartridge handgun - handguns were banned as a result of the Dumblane school shooting many years ago.
Some of the "isles" - Wight, Man still allow handguns as the ban did not cover them.
Some pistol shooters I know do have a firearms licence and access to their 'own' pistol, but these are stored in a range armoury and can only be taken out to shoot, not home.

Technically you could own either on a Section 5 Firearms Certificate. Cartridge pistols were reclassified, rather than banned totally. Section Five also covers machine guns, and semi-auto and pump centreline rifles. The Home Secretary issues S.5 FACs; some were issued for the 2012 Olympics, and 2014 Commonwealth squads. Had the recent Birmingham Commonwealth games included shooting events, I suspect home countries athletes would have gotten S.5 authority for training before the games.
That's for England, Wales, and Scotland. The 1997 Firearms (Amendment) act did not apply to Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, and the Channel Islands.
