Another Newbie

Post by PirateJohn »

I just created an account and thought I would introduce myself. I bought an Air Venturi V10 after I got inspired to finally try competitive shooting during the Olympics. I'm thinking I might get a good Feinwerkbau at some point, though. For now, I set up a pellet trap in my apartment and am getting comfortable with the rhythm and the sighting, but I'm hoping to find a club near me.

This weekend, I tried taking sixty shots and keeping score to see how I would do. I have just enough room for the full 10 meters. My scores out of 600 were 497 on Saturday and 493 on Sunday, so that was pretty encouraging. :-)

Careful, if you get hooked it will cost you a little money and a lot of time. ;^) The high 400s is a very good first two "matches".

I just got a job with a huge pay increase so my pistol was a gift to myself :-D

I had expected after a month I might break 400 so I was surprised when I was chasing 500. I think once I do get a better pistol and start buying better ammo (I'm using cheapo Daisy right now) I should be over 500 and maybe a bit more.

When you're 46 and your sports glory days are far behind you, it's good to know that you can still take up a whole new sport from scratch!

That's what I thought until Javad Foroughi won the Olympic gold medal at 42, and that 7 qualifiers were over 40.

Javad's performance was inspiring (to me anyway). Nothing fancy, just good concentration and great shooting.

One thing that is fun for me to think, even though I consciously know it's totally unrealistic, is imagining i could still be an Olympian someday :-D Doesn't matter if i never am, because the time I'm putting into shooting now is really energizing me, and if imagining myself marching into the stadium keeps me going, then even if it is never going to happen, it's still a good thing.

I was 47 when I went to my first Olympics, prior to that I was sailing
and ocean racing until 38. Shooting was my winter sport.
Still time for you yet.

It was my first ever purchase of my gun and gun equipment, so I bought the cheapest equipment just to see if I would like it before I started spending more money. I'm using up the package of 100 red-dot targets (along with targets I printed on card stock with my laser printer) until the new targets arrive.
