Steyr LP5 Operation Question

Hello, new shooter to this website and it’s been very helpful to read the information available here. I recently purchased an LP5, used of course, in nice condition. Thanks to a member here, I also have the original operating manual and test target! He happened to have attended the estate sale where my pistol came from, and noticed here that I’d purchased it from GB.

ANYWAY, i filled the cylinder from a CO2 tank and went to attach it to the pistol. The pistol was not cocked and no magazine inserted. As I screwed the cylinder on, suddenly all the gas released out of every orifice of the pistol. Is that normal? I found that with the pistol cocked, I can attach a full cylinder and everything is fine.

Another issue that I’m not sure about is that with the cylinder in place and a full magazine, after firing the last shot, I can continue to fire the pistol and it resets. Even after removing the empty magazine, I can fire the pistol and it resets the trigger, ready to fire again. Is that normal?

The manual doesn’t mention any of this, so I’ve come to the gurus.

I have an LP-50, and I think the firing after the magazine is empty is normal. I haven't tested it, but I seem to remember that the trigger reset is operated by the gas, not the magazine.

As for venting the CO2, I'm not surprised. A lot of CO2 pistols can hold the firing valve open if they aren't cocked. Tau-7's will definitely do this.

Thanks for this. For some reason I thought the pistol would not re-cock unless there a pellet was fired or there was a dry fire magazine inserted. So for storage, I guess you remove the cylinder with the pistol cocked, pull the trigger, and putt hem away? Otherwise I’ll have to store the pistol cocked and with the cylinder installed. Seems odd, but can’t say I know any better.

PS, if someone wanted a good laugh I wish I had a video of me carefully installing the cylinder for the first time when the whole thing went PPPFFFFFSSSSSSSTTTTTT!!!!! in my hand. I’ve been around and used compressed gases for welding and am super careful so I was wearing eye protection. Should also have been wearing “Depends” for adults.
