MP90s grip, differance in ’beavertail’ width

Post by VonKasta »

Disclaimber: I dont know if beaver tail is the correct term for the upper support but please educate me.

I finally had the opportunity to buy a used MP90s chambered in .32wc so naturally I went for it.
As Im a leftie I had to source a lefty grip and managed to find a used standard Nill grip at a reasonable price.
As so happens I already shoot a rimfire MP90s I am surprised to find that the width of the upper support differs quite a bit (40 mm compared to 34mm). Do anybody know when the width changed? The .32 is older than my .22, I have right and left grips for both and they show the same differance in width.
Naturally, I would prefer to find a wide version for the .32 as well, not only for having the same feel but also as I imagine recoil management will be more consistent.
I could swap over the wide grip to the .32, but the keen eye will notice I have altered the grip angle and molded it to fit the .22 frame, so its a bad fit for the .32 (I will however carry out the same modifications for the designated .32 grip)

And as any thread is useless without pichers:

I suspect that the grips Nill makes for Benelli are slightly different from their standard offering. I really love the Benelli grips, but when I've ordered Nill grips for other pistols, they aren't quite the same.

The support for the pistol is normally on the top of the 2nd finger, counteracted by pressure up against the heel of the hand. As a result, there is (normally) very little pressure (or even contact) at the bottom of the "beaver tail" unless you have your heel rest cranked up so high that it's clamping your hand in place (not recommended). I've seen people go to great lengths to putty that area to get a "good fit", and as soon as they lift the pistol up, a gap opens there & all their effort is a waste of time.

I might have misworded that a bit, both grips are stamped with the ’world cup’ logo so they should be designated Benelli grips.
Upon further investigation it might be that the grips are of different size, it hardly feels like they are but using a caliper they do differ in a couple more spots.
Annoying that Nill doesnt stamp their grips with size

Looking at the last picture, and assuming that the palm shelf is adjusted to your hand on both grips, you probably have an M and an L grip, judjing by the amount of wood that is left on the bottom of the grip.
My guess is that you have an M on your .22 and an L on your .32

Hope this helps

I think you are correct, but the differance in grip length under the palm shelf is due to that I had to cut about a cm off in order for it to fit the issf regulation box after altering the grip angle.
