As many of you have heard, Tennessee Tech's rifle team is in jeopardy of being
cut. The final decision has not yet been made, and is being made by the
university's president, Dr. Bob Bell. The decision would be due to budget
cuts that were made throughout the entire school, especially the athletic
department. As we have worked with a minimal budget before, the team was
willing to work with whatever money they left us with, no matter how small the
amount.
The team has a great history of being on of the top competitors in the NCAA.
Year after year, the team continues to stand in the top ten of all of the
programs in the nation, including winning three championships in the '80s.
There are some outstanding alumnus that have shot for Tech, and we want to see
them continue to be proud of the team this year, and for years in the future.
With your support, hopefully the administrators can see how valuable the team
is to the university and to the students. Please e-mail the school's
president at RBELL@TNTECH.EDU. Also the interim athletic director is Mike
Henningan, who is also the football coach. His e-mail is PPARROTT@TNTECH.EDU.
Please forward this e-mail to anyone you know that can help support the team.

Losing the rifle team would be a crime.Shooters work hard in their sport as I am sure football players do at theirs. However, I am sure the football team will not be cut.First West Virginia, now possibly Tech. WHO'S NEXT????

That also brings up the point of NCAA's minimum number of programs to keep NCAA status. If I recall correctly, NCAA requires something like 35 schools with active intercollegiate rifle programs to keep the sport under NCAA's blessing.
If the number of active programs drops below a certain minimum, NCAA can put the sport on probation or 'pull the plug' on rifle as an official varsity NCAA sport. Rifle would then become a club sport, like collegiate pistol is now, but not an NCAA varsity sport. NRA, USAS or some other organization would probably have to adopt the sport to conduct a national collegate championship.
Since the military shooting programs have grown more limited, collegiate programs are the primary feeders for our athlete development stream, and loss of NCAA status for rifle would be a huge blow to the future of the shooting sports in the USA. If there is no one to pass the torch to for future generations, the fire just goes out...

After e-mailing the school, I got this response:
"Mr. Houston,
We have agreed to keep Rifle as an intercollegiate sport for this upcoming
school year.
However, if the present budget situation remains as is in the state of
Tennessee, then the sport would in all probabilility be eliminated after the
2003-04 year. We will make efforts this year to gain additional outside
financial support. If the support is there, we will revisit this issue.
Supporters of rifle at TTU need to step forward and provide a base of
financial support to make the sport cost effective.
