SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic—Tom Tamas and Ken Johnson, both members of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit, kclinched Pan American medals for the U.S. Thursday in the Men’s 50m Prone event at Sans Souci Shooting Range.
Tamas won the gold and the Olympic quota slot for his country, shooting a score of 697.4. And although he led throughout the qualification rounds, Tamas felt a little off in the finals, shooting a 102.4. But it obviously didn’t make that much of a dent in his first round lead as he finished on top once again for a Pan American Gold.
“I may have finished first,” Tomas said. “But to myself, I came in second. I will need to shoot for all tens in the final round in order to compete at the level in which I need to be.”
Ken Johnson finished just two points off of Tamas’ score, shooting a 695.4 for a bronze medal. He gained a point on Tamas and finished only a point away from Cuba’s Reinier Estpinian.
Up next for the U.S. Pan American Rifle Team is the Men’s 50m 30X40, starting at 9a.m. on Friday. The 10m Running Target Team will also finish its second day of competitions tomorrow at 9. a.m.
