10m target background colour

Post by Coolmeester »

Hello.

I'm interested if there is some regulations by ISSF on what colour the background surrounding the targets should be? I've seen mainly white or green backgrounds in competitions. Any specific RAL codes?

Thanks for helping!

All that ISSF rule 6.4.14.1 says on the subject is:-

"The background area behind the targets must be a non-reflecting, light even neutral color."

Having been involved in the design of a couple of major ranges, apparently "a non-reflecting, light even neutral color" means something different to architects.

This makes me think of the new rule on pistol sights, which also need to be "non-reflective". What does this mean? The only non-reflective "color" is black. So if green, for example, is allowed for target surrounds, does this mean it's considered non-reflective? If so, can I use green sights on my pistol? I bet not, but the wording is not at all clear.

I have received an answer from the ISSF Technical Director regarding the meaning, and more importantly the spirit, of the new rule regarding colour.

Normal colours are allowed. It is fluorescent colours that are prohibited.

And how does one distinguish between 'bright' and 'fluorescent'?

A moot point for ISSF pistol events (if the range complies (???)) where black and blacker are the two realistic options.

A small hand held UV blacklight will identify most fluorescent pigments. Plenty cheap ones about. Non fluorencent paint will look no different.
Something like that will need to be written into Equipment Control guidelines.

I think "non-reflecting" means flat or matte, not gloss.

Nice! I can't focus on my front sight without a little dot on it.
