PTO

Post by holmqer »

Kind of a silly question but I see this acronym in association with shooting matches and have yet to figure out what it actually means. It's clearly not Power Take Off or Parent Teacher Organization.

PTO = Preliminary Tryout

You can go to the USAS web sight to get the information.

Hope this helps.

As usual, Clarence is the quiet voice of reason. (Believe it and I'll tell you another.)

Probably, this would just be another match for you.

BUT, it does give you a shot at a National Record or Championship without a major headache beyond shooting the match.

Good luck!

Thank you.

I'm in no danger of shooting a National Record, I just have fun going to the various matches (Bullseye and AP) in my area. I enjoy trying to improve my skills and am more in competition with my self than anyone else.

When I go to USAS website there are all sorts of PTO matches listed, but try as I might, I could not find anywhere on their site what actually said what it meant.

If you enter "pto usa shooting" into google, the top result you get

explains it.

We all were just kidding you. PTO actually stands for "Personal Time Off."

"PTO" (anachronism; archaic): Stands for "Preliminary Try-Out." Dates from the time* when the US International Shooting Championships (USISC, now USASNC) were so popular that entries had to be limited to those who could shoot a minimum score.

In modern parlance, one might refer to a "PTO" as a "match."
