I recently purchased a walther ssp (mechanical). I am wondering what is the best way to decock the pistol after a shoot?

You should use dry firing insert provided with your pistol:

....or draw both cocking levers backwards slightly and release the trigger. This will keep the firing pin from hitting anything. However the best way is to insert the dry fire insert as mentioned.
