Arc of movement help please?

Post by toddinjax »

When I line up a shot, slowly lower through the center of the target, I don't seem to "hover" in a circle around the center but rather my AOM is "center & left of center".
Obviously your right arm with raised pistol can more easily swing left than right, towards the end of its range of motion. My shots, barring any triggering error tend to be dead center or to the left. I do not stand at a 90 degree angle to the target, maybe 45, so my arm is not really at the end of its range of motion, but dry firing with a target or holding exercises also confirms this movement pattern. Is this the norm for right handed shooters?
Of course I'd like to keep my center hits and distribute the 1 to 1.5 cm spread I get to the left between L & R for a higher score with the same size group.
I'd appreciate any thought and suggestions.
Thanks, todd.

Come a LITTLE closer to 90 degrees. Adjust your sights so the group centers. I know that sound like fudging, but what the hell.

Todd, It's the norm for you. We all differ due to neck and shoulder stiffness. I shoot much more facing the target than I used to because a separated shoulder healed up very tight and I can no longer get more right motion on that arm.

Just more your feet a small amount (just like NPA in rifle). Sometimes just turning the leading foot toe in or out is enough. Instead of NPA in pistol I think of NAA (Natural Area of Aim).

This is my opinion too.

Thanks for the replies. I've experimented with stance and while it changes the NPA, my arc of mvt still moves center to left. I do have a rotator cuff injury from a bicycle crash in 1988, maybe that has something to do with this.
I hear you preaching' common sense Rover (this time anyway) I was just reluctant to alter what I know to be a "properly" sighted in gun. I will try your suggestion. Is this kind of "compromise" common?

I don't know about common, but when I'm having a bad session I get the down and left, too. Mine is from bad trigger pull. I start dry firing for a while to "break" the cycle.

NPA may be confusing you, but there is NO NPA in pistol shooting.

Very likely what you are doing is squeezing the fingertips on the grip during triggering.

You might try doing some dry fire training and holding exercises against a vertical line. Then you can make some vertical line targets and do some live fire at those. This should allow you to decrease your horizontal movement by focusing more on that component. Make some adjustments, if necessary.
