A day on the range playing with Primers

Post by David M »

Primer Strike Test
Test carried out using a Manurhin revolver, hammer spring weight measured with hammer full back and scales just under firing pin.
Primer Sensitivity
Min Hammer Tension Strain Screw
Federal 100 1180 grams 1 1/2 turns
Winchester WSP 1380 grams 2 turns
Ficochi SP 1380 grams 2 turns
Magteck 1 1/2 1500 grams 2 1/4 turns
CCI #500 1500 grams 2 1/4 turns
Max Remington 5 1/2 1600 grams 2 1/2 turns

Load Testing
Two tests carried out with same load using all primer brands. One using minimum strike, the other with strike increased approx 200 grams (1/2 turn on strain screw).
Slight increase in average velocity across all primers of about 6 fps.
The Std Dev did change more with the more sensitive primers, nearly a 40% reduction with reduced Extreme Spread and the least sensitive primers only had a marginal change in both SD and ES.
