save the valley stream rifle team!

Post by OD Rifle »

Hello-
i am looking for ways to save the rifle team for my school. This can include grants, competitions, we need anything to help. Our team is NY state champions, and County champions, in both air rifle and .22. Many athletes on my team are ranked in NY state and some in the Country. Some of us have the great honor to attend the junior olympics, in Colorado. In a time of great budget cuts, students are really the ones that are suffering. I understand that the board has to do what they have to do. But all i want to know is how do you expect students to pay for college when their parents are also getting salary cuts? Many students rely on scholarships to enlist into college.I know that many of us have gotten full or partial scholarships from this sport.

This is my story, about my life, i know most people have dreams including me but right now my dreams cant be fulfilled.

I am student athlete Central High School, and a member of the Valley Stream District Rifle team. This team is my life. Everything about this team I enjoy. This is the sport that is just right for me. I dislike contact sports. Rifle is the only sport where there is no contact between players. This team has a very strong team effort and every member cares about the others.Since starting this sport I have met amazing people, around my age, doing the same thing that I do. I have made many friends in my many years being a rifle athlete. I strive for excellence in my sport. My parents have spent thousands of dollars for this sport, at no cost to the district. This follows with many kids on the team.I hope you can save this unbelievable program for many years to come.

Thank you very much-
a valley stream rifle competitor

Now that the district received $395,000 in additional state aid, i would hope that they would strongly consider keeping the rifle team.

OD Rifle,

I had a similar experience four years ago with my high school. I have attached an explanation about how my team went about dealing with the school board and saving our team. I felt that my reply was a little too long to put directly on the forum, so I have attached a PDF below.

I really apricate your responce, i really makes a difference knowing people are in the same boat as me. I know my mom will aply for the nra grant but we dont know if we will recieve the money. My coach tried to take a salary cut but the teachers union wouldnt allow that to happen. We all show up to the board meetings. The links at the bottom is longisland, ny's newspaper, while we were at the board meeting. My coach isnt allowed to talk at the board meetings. This cut would also impact the rifle club in am in its pal rifle. So now this means there would only be 2 schools left after we go ( for.22) so they would also be cut. This is a domino effect!

During the Board Meeting last night. The President of the board told the Rifle Team as per their legal counsel they could fund raise to save the team.

Yes, i know as i was there at the last budget meeting. The parents of the rifle team, pal rifle team, and the bowling team will vote no on the school budget. Do you think that it is fair that teachers are getting raises while the bowling and rifle teams are cut?

Thank You
