Killough Shooting Sports in Winters Texas opened today as a Eley ammo testing range. They have two machine rests for rifle and for pistol. Rifle rests are at 50 meters and the pistol are at 25 meters. It cost $45 to fire four 10 shot groups using different lots of ammo. Targets are electronic and group size is figured by computer.
It seems to me the ranges are too short for getting meaningful results. I have tested lots of 22 ammo in my model 41 using a 4X scope off sand bags. All the good ammo shot under an inch at 50 yards with the best going under .75". With a machine rest I would expect groups of .5" at 50 yards. At 25 meters groups would be in the .25" range. It would be very hard to see any meaningful difference with groups so small.
