New National Trophy Matches History Articles. Two new articles that are part of Hap Rocketto's ongoing series of articles on the National Trophy Matches were just posted on the CMP website. The articles, titled A Short History of the National Trophy Rifle Team Match and A Short History of the National Infantry Trophy Team Match, provide carefully researched and documented chronicles of the competitions for these trophies and the teams that strived to win them. These accounts include many fascinating anecdotes about the competitions for these prestigious National Trophies and the competitors and coaches who were involved in them. Hap Rocketto is one of the nation's foremost experts on National Matches history and has published numerous articles on the subject. Two earlier articles by Rocketto, A Short History of the Distinguished Shooter Program and A Short History of the President's Match and the President's Hundred, were previously posted on the CMP website. The CMP expresses its sincere appreciation to Hap Rocketto for making these excellent historical records available to everyone who is interested in the history of the National Matches and American marksmanship.

CMP Supports 4-H Shooting Sports. The CMP annually supports 4-H Shooting Sports. Below are two Thank Yous from State 4-H Shooting Sports Coordinators.

West Virginia

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank CMP for their continued support to our WV 4-H Shooting Sports Program. The contribution from CMP was used to conduct and support the State 4-H Air Rifle Competition. The State 4-H Shooting Sports Air Rifle Competition was held January 28, 2012 at the Braxton County Armory in Gassaway, WV, with 86 junior and senior 4-H'ers from area counties competing and 158 4-H coaches, parents, and others attended to view the event. The results of the Junior event were as follows: 1st Place Ind.- Alaina Smith, Putnam County; 2nd Place Ind.- Lucas Skinner, Monroe County; and 3rd Place Ind.- Peyton Rowe, Wayne County. The top three junior teams were Putnam, Monroe, and Monongalia, respectively. Results of the Senior event were as follows: 1st Place Ind.- Taylor Marshall, Wayne County; 2nd Place Ind.- Shannon Marshall, Wayne County; and 3rd Place Ind.-Austion Marshall, Wayne County. The top three senior teams were Wayne, Marshall, and Upshur, respectively. The Wayne County 4-H Senior Team will represent WV at the National 4-H Shooting Sports Invitational, June 17-22, 2012 in Grand Island, Nebraska. The team from Wayne County pictured to the right includes: Taylor Marshall, Shannon Marshall, Austion Marshall, and Charles Bradshaw, and Bruce Crockett (head coach).

Minnesota

Thank you so much for the continued support of the Civilian Marksmanship Program for the 4-H Shooting Sports Program. Minnesota greatly appreciates your support and the opportunities provided by CMP. In 2011, the MN 4-H Shooting Sports & Wildlife Program utilized the financial support from CMP to support the MN 4-H Shooting Sports & Wildlife Ambassador Program. Youth have stepped up to promote the MN 4-H SS&W program by attending events, banquets, promo days and other organizational functions with booths, banners, answering questions and planning opportunities for other youth. Most notably in 2011, the MN 4-H SS&W Ambassadors participated at the MN Governor's Deer Hunting Opener and promoted the 4-H SS&W program. The opportunity for these young people to visit with the Governor and many others, from other legislative members to conservation organizations and community members was a great publicity opportunity. Most recently the Ambassadors attended an archery event where they spent the day answering questions about 4-H and SS&W and encouraging youth to get involved. We look forward to many more opportunities in the future for these Ambassadors to tell the 4-H SS&W story in MN and get youth and volunteers involved.

Indiana
The Indiana 4-H Shooting Sports is very grateful for the CMP support of our state level efforts. We use your donation to support the 4-H Shooting Sports Coordinator certification training which is held annually (September) in conjunction with our 4-H Shooting Sports discipline certification workshops in archery, muzzle, outdoor pursuits, pistol, rifle, and shotgun. The coordinators study youth development stages, risk management, running their local program, working with the Extension Youth Educator and working with me at the state office. On Saturday afternoon participants visit each of the discipline training sessions to observe for about 30 minutes. That evening they meet with one of the state instructors so they have an opportunity to ask discipline-specific questions. On Sunday the coordinators participate as students in two practicums that the discipline instructors are required to present as part of their training. This gives them the opportunity to experience the program from the youth's point of view (and shoot). Every county that has a 4-H Shooting Sports program in Indiana is required to have a certified coordinator and to date we have trained 331 4-H volunteers to serve in this capacity. Your funding helps me to provide materials and keep costs down. I think our workshop is a good deal at $125 for 22 hours of training (Friday night at 7 pm through Sunday about 4pm) and includes a Coordinator's Handbook, shooting opportunities, and room and board (dorm style).

CMP Coaching Resources Page - The CMP has a list of How to articles, videos and posters along with many resources for shooting coaches. The latest addition to the page is an article submitted by Joel Martin on how to create an inexpensive Three-Position offhand stand. View the CMP Coaching Resources page at http://www.thecmp.org/Training/CoachingResources.htm.
