Recommendation for buying surplus ammo

Post by Slimjym »

I was just wondering if anyone could recommend any specific surplus ammo that I could purchase in bulk for plinking my Remington Varmint .308. Thanks

Don't fool with that stuff. Get yourself a cheap Lee loading outfit. All you need is a press, dies, cheapie trimmer, and a powder dipper (comes with Lee dies). Shouldn't cost more than two or three boxes of factory ammo.

Surplus ammo is a crapshoot unless you know someone in the business. I bought 200 rounds of surplus German 308 ammo in an army leak proof pouch. I thought this was a great buy until I fired it. Turns out it was machine gun ammo and hotter than sin. The first shot in my M1A banged the bolt back so hard, the bolt rollers jumped the track. Never again. I ended up pulling the bullets for the brass.
