According to the NFHS survey shooting (riflery) has 3445 high school participants. It's interesting to see where kids choose to spend their time as riflery is about equal to that of fencing.

Hi
Wichita Public Schools don't allow Shotgun, airgun, smallbore, or fencing. If memory serves, they even forced the ROTC groups to give up their (nearly worthless combat-wise anyway) swords. We don't even dare discuss that concept with them. I'm amazed that there are as many as there were listed.
Oh, the BEST one is that one of our Eagle Scouts was kicked out of school for a while for having his paint ball gun in his car while he was a member of a school sponsored paintball club. Not Wichita, a suburb.

Undercounting
These numbers are 75 - 100% undercounted. We have more than 126 Varsity Rifle Teams in Georgia alone. http://www.ghsa.net/riflery
NFHS knows this but has to use the numbers reported to them... The States Under report...
