I don't have to tell you all about the 717 rear sight issues, lets just say that they leave a little to be desired. So, after a little thought, I came up with this solution. I carved a piece of aluminum to fit the hole the original sight came out of and fitted a Micro sight for a M1911 to it. The new sight base is retained to the side plates by a screw from the bottom. Except for the screw access hole in the bottom of the side plates, and a slight clearance cut in the top rear corners of the side plates, no other changes are made.
If I was going to do it over again, I would attempt to find a target quality sight with a smaller dovetail. That would allow the sight to be installed more to the rear and make the notches in the top rear corner of the side plates unnecessary.
