Recent Target Pistol Shooting Books

The most recent books in my collection on target pistol shooting are "Successful Pistol Shooting" (2nd ed) by Leatherdale (1995) and "Successful Pistol Shooting" by Hickey (1996). Are there any more recent books?

I can't think of any, in English, but there is an excellent German book. That is I think still being translated, but the folks doing it have been doing so for a few years now. If I remember I'll try and find out if there's been any progress recently.

That would be interesting. Thanks. There has not been a decade since the 1870s that did not have an english language book on target pistol technique.

I would like to recommend the USAMU pistol shooters manual as best that deals with primarily US three gun shooting using the 2700 aggragate with 90 record shots with the 22 ,center fire and the 45. I firmly believe that fundamentals don't change and that the information contained in this manuel, if applioed ,can quickly allow most shooters to achieve master level scores in two years or less. Thanks. The USAMU manual is a good book. I have versions dating back to the early 1960s. The fundamentals may not change, but is seems like writing on target shooting has just about disappeared in recent years.

I took a clinic from Brian Zins (9 times US conventional pistol champ) a while back. Being a Marine, he may a bit biased, but he said the Army manual hasn't really been significantly updated in some time. I believe Brian helped to re-write the Marines' manual, available here:

The USAMU manual is good but's not great. I found it hard reading and outdated in parts. I do however find the need to cherry pick from multiple sources for anything I try and learn as that gives me a mix of information. Some writers can also better convey their message than others so by using a variety of sources you can often better understand the message than by trying to pick it all up from a single source. I guess that's why most of us have a dozen or more books on pistol (and rifle) shooting in our libraries.

I have nearly 100 books and pamphlets on target pistol shooting in my libary. But nothing from the 21st century!

If you read German there is a pistol book out that is similar to the "Ways of the Rifle". One of these years the english translation may be available.

Gil Hebard Pistol Shooters Treasury. Excellent collection of articles. I have read mine many times.

Yeah, but it's about 40 years old, and strictly about US bullseye shooting. The fundamentals haven't changed, but not much else applies to Olympic shooting.

I shot AP at my club in Norwich, England on Tuesday and Frank Leatherdale was there also shooting AP. A charming gentleman now 87 years old who still shoots his FWB 65. We're lucky, don't need the book we just ask the master!
